Dorn sought to secure radiocarbon dates from supposedly organic substances extracted from rock varnishes from control sites near petroglyphs he sampled for his cation-ratio method (i.e. to calibrate CR ratios; see below).
Cation-ratio dating (CR) is a classical example of a method providing results that must be expected to be highly variable depending on sampling site.
Dorn in particular argued strongly in support of radiocarbon analysis of rock varnishes, including its use in calibrating the cation-ratio method he developed (Dorn, 1983).
